About Us
Treatobacco.net is for those working on the treatment of tobacco dependence throughout the world. It presents authoritative (see contributors) evidence-based information about the treatment of tobacco dependence, under five headings: Demographics and Health Effects, Efficacy, Health Economics, Policy, Safety.
Key findings, commentaries and supporting references have been collated and reviewed by around 50 international experts and the evidence is periodically updated to incorporate new research. Referenced slide kits and other resources can also be downloaded from the site.
Treatobacco.net is run by the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) in partnership with the International Union Against Cancer (UICC). The core content of treatobacco.net is currently available in 11 languages making it a genuinely international resource for those interested in treating tobacco dependence around the world. The languages are: Arabic, Chinese, Czech, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
Treatobacco.net is a unique source of evidence-based data and practical support for the treatment of tobacco dependence. It is aimed at physicians, nurses, pharmacists, dentists, psychologists, researchers, policy makers, regulators and anyone interested in the personal and public health issues connected with tobacco use around the world.
The treatment of tobacco dependence is a popular subject for research and finding evidence-based, authoritative data can be time-consuming. Treatobacco.net was developed to bring the best information together in a single, independent website.
Structure and management arrangements
Treatobacco.net is run by a management board chaired by Dorothy Hatsukami on behalf of SRNT. The board includes representatives from Africa, China, India and Latin America. Financial administration is based at SRNT and the project administrator at Nottingham University, England. Each of the five core sections has a chair assisted by a group of experts. The editorial board has a chair, two deputy chairs, and currently 9 members. Ten tobacco specialists check the translations from English, which are made by a translation agency. Contributors include scientists from the Cochrane Centre, Centers for Disease Control, American Cancer Society, and many universities. Treatobacco is an authoritative, independent resource with global reach.
Funding
Treatobacco.net is funded by a mixture of private (pharmaceutical) and non-profit organisations, none of whose representatives sit on the management board.
A new website
Treatobacco.net has undergone a major update culminating in its relaunch at the SRNT Annual meeting in February 2008. The five main sections have been updated and the site has been completely redesigned. One result is that the site is more dynamic. We will be able to change and add content continuously, and so will be able to offer some topical material (for example conference announcements), as well as a greater range of material. We welcome feedback on all aspects of the site, including suggestions for content, especially to help us build a resource library that will help you in your work.
Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco
SRNT is the only international scientific society entirely dedicated to fostering and disseminating research on tobacco and nicotine. SRNT has over 1,000 members in 40 countries, 899 in North America, 95 in Europe and 52 in the rest of the world. SRNT's annual conference brings together the world's greatest concentration of research scientists and research findings on nicotine and tobacco. SRNT has a long history of providing scientific expertise and information to the World Health Organization, the United Kingdom's Health Education Authority, the US Food and Drug Administration and other national and international bodies.
