Introduction
The purpose of this economics executive summary is to provide information on economic assessments of interventions to assist smoking cessation and the effect of economic interventions on cessation. It will summarize the roles of unit price increases for tobacco products, the cost-effectiveness of mass media education programs, and reimbursement and support for smoking cessation. Evidence from the economic analysis of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and other pharmacotherapy will be reported in addition to the economic impact of reducing patient out-of-pocket costs for accessing effective cessation therapies. Also, evidence on the distribution and availability of NRT will be reported to ascertain its respective impacts on increasing utilization of smoking cessation therapies and interventions. Given the types and nature of the reported economic evidence, recommendations for policy and areas for further research are suggested.
