Introduction
The purpose of this economics executive summary is to provide
economic assessments of interventions to assist smoking cessation.
It summarizes the roles of tobacco product prices and provides
information on the cost-effectiveness of various tobacco control
interventions supporting smoking cessation. Evidence from the
economic analysis of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and other
pharmacotherapy is reported in addition to the economic impact of
reducing patient out-of-pocket costs for accessing effective
cessation therapies. Information on the distribution and
availability of NRT is reported to ascertain its respective impacts
on increasing utilization of smoking cessation therapies and
interventions. Given the types and nature of the existing economic
evidence, recommendations for policy and areas for further research
are suggested.
