Recommendations
- All smokers, even those with cardiovascular disease, should be
offered nicotine replacement therapy, bupropion or varenicline to
aid cessation.
- Pregnant smokers should be encouraged to attempt cessation
using educational and behavioral interventions before using
pharmacological approaches. If such quit attempts are unsuccessful,
the risks and benefits of pharmacotherapy should be considered and
explained to the woman. The decision to use pharmacotherapy should
be made on an individualised basis after discussion between the
woman and her physician.
